Operating Scissors And Other Types Of Surgical Scissors That Are Worth Knowing
Surgery as defined by the dictionary is the branch of medicine which uses manual and instrumental means to investigate and treat an injury or disease or to enhance bodily function or appearance. Surgical procedures have played an important role in saving the lives of millions of people and improving the quality of lives of those who have undergone cosmetic surgery. When carrying out these medical procedures, the use of surgical instruments like operating scissors is a key component. They are one of the most widely used types of surgical scissors as they are used in basic first aid kits. They are also employed in general surgical procedures for cutting sutures, gauze and other similar materials. This type of scissors has either straight or curved set of blades with tip combinations like blunt/blunt, blunt/sharp or sharp/sharp. Iris scissors are another type of scissors used in surgery that are basic to performing eye operation, hence its name. Their blades come either as curved or angled and they have sharp/sharp tip combination which is suitable for removing dead tissue.
Still another type of scissors is the Metzenbaum scissors, which are preferred by surgeons for cutting soft, delicate tissue. They are available in various lengths, with either curved or straight blades and blunt tips. There are also Mayo scissors, which are useful for cutting joints and other hard tissue. Then there are bandage scissors, often characterized as angled tip scissors that have a blunt tip on the bottom blade. As the name implies, their main function is to help cut bandages without hurting or damaging the skin. The bottom blade of this scissor is purposely longer so that it can go under bandages much more easily. There are also cosmetic surgery scissors or the microsurgical scissors that are of very fine construction. Similar to dermatologist supplies, these scissors make up the set of tools used when performing operation that aims to improve the appearance of an individual. This type of scissors has straight or curved blades and is capable of dissecting, cutting, clumping and manipulating tissue.
Other than the types mentioned earlier, there are also tenotomy scissors. Tenotomy scissors are surgical scissors, which are mainly used for surgeries on eyelids, lips and mucous membranes. Their blades may be curved or straight and with tip combinations that include blunt/blunt or sharp/sharp. The blunt/blunt tip combination is ideal for blunt dissecting while the sharp/sharp set of tips is recommended for more sensitive dissecting procedures. When employed for medical procedures, these scissors should be sterilized. This means that they should be free from live microorganisms or bacteria that can cause infection on the patient’s body.
