Can a tongue piercing be done with a gold barbell?
I got a tongue piercing with stainless steel but after 24 hours my outer gums burned as well as the bottom of my tongue. Then I notice that the skin on my gums was peeling off…I guess I had an allergic reaction to the metal. But I really want the tongue ring, is it possible to pierce it with gold instead of the surgical stainless steel???
You may have a nickle sensitivity. This isnt terribly common, but it does happen. I have custom ordered things in for people many times.
Surgical stainless steel is ok for most people(anywhere from .05% Nickel to 10% nickle depending on the manufacturer), but if you are one of the few, Gold or Nickle free Titanium would be the best. Most shops can custom order you the jewelry in, as you need a starter bar size.(not a stock thing)
Keep in mind that a starter bar is roughly 3/4 to allow for swelling. Most people dont keep this size in their tongue for longer than a few weeks, as it can get annoying and it can hit your teeth.
I would recommend nickle free titanium to start, as it is a much cheaper alternative to Gold. This way you can replace the bar to a smaller one in a few weeks after, and it wont cost you a fortune.Do price comparison, to see.
Also keep in mind that you will have to tell the shop before hand of what you are planing to do, as many shops will have to custom order and sterilize the jewelery especially for you.
Another thing you should look into is, your aftercare. I dont know how you were cleaning it, but your aftercare could of been causing irritation to the piercin. It does sound like a metal allergy, from what I’ve seen anyway, but over rinsing is another issue aswell.
